The Senate Finance Committee will hold a confirmation hearing April 9 to consider the nomination of Marilyn Tavenner to be the next administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Finance Committee and the full Senate must vote to confirm Tavenner.  CMS has not had a Senate-confirmed administrator since 2006.

Tavenner has been serving as acting administrator since late 2011 when she was first nominated. The Senate Finance Committee did not take up Tavenner's first nomination as Republican opposition to the Affordable Care Act (ACA) was still strong and threatened to derail the nomination. Since that time, Tavenner’s popularity with Democrats and Republicans as well as provider group has grown. Some observers say the anger among ACA opponents has softened, which, combined with Tavenner's popularity among Democrats and Republicans and provider groups, may make it possible for her nomination to get through the Senate.
