The Alliance for Health Reform has developed a FAQthat answers key questions about the insurance marketplaces that opened for enrollment Oct. 1. The document also provides links to websites that go into detailed explanations of how the law and the exchanges work. Some links point directly to state marketplaces and other government resources.

Questions addressed in this FAQ include:
  • What are the marketplaces?
  • Who can use, or has to use, the marketplaces?
  • Who can I call with questions?
  • How much will insurance cost? What is the penalty if I don't enroll?
  • What new requirements does the ACA impose on insurers?
  • How will the marketplace in my state work, and how do I find contact information?
  • How do I contact the marketplace in my state?
  • Will I have a choice of plans?
  • What are my health plan options if I am unemployed or an individual with a low income?
  • Where can I get information about the marketplaces in other languages?
