VNAA Names 2013 Congressional Champions
Champions will be Honored at VNAA Public Policy Leadership Conference

WASHINGTON–July 23,2013–The Visiting Nurse Associations of America (VNAA) today announced its 2013 Congressional Champions. VNAA annually honors congressional leaders who champion issues in support of nonprofit home health and hospice providers, and will present the awards during the Public Policy Leadership Conference (PPLC) in Washington, DC on Sept. 18 and 19, 2013. The 2013 Congressional Champions are:

  • Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA)VNAA recognizes Harkin’s leadership as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee and as a longstanding supporter of ensuring access to care for vulnerable patients, including home health and hospice care.

  • Sen. John Thune (R-SD)Thune is a co-sponsor of the Fostering Independence Through Technology Act, a bill that would allow for more efficient delivery of healthcare to the elderly and homebound, while also allowing older adults the option of aging at home for longer periods of time in a more cost effective setting than other healthcare options. 

  • Rep. Pat Tiberi (R-OH-12): Tiberi is an original co-sponsor of the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act of 2013, which would allow Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to certify and make changes to home health plans of treatment to ensure that seniors and disabled citizens have timely access to home health services under Medicare.

  • Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI-2): Langevin was a co-sponsor of the Home Health Care Planning Improvement Act of 2011, which also would allow Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to certify and make changes to home health plans of treatmentIn addition, Langevin has opposed home health co-payments and payment cuts. 

VNAA looks forward to presenting the Congressional Champion awards during the PPLC’s Capitol Hill Reception on Sept. 18. The annual PPLC event convenes nonprofit home health and hospice executives to educate lawmakers about the nonprofit community-based care delivery systems and the vulnerable patient populations they serve.
